Two three week holidays in Rome. March 2001 and October 2002. The best area to stay is around Piazza Navona.
The dome is built with lighter materials towards the centre and has an opening in the middle.
This view shows Bernini's elephant.
The Castel d'Angelo is a refuge for the pontiff, built on Hadrian's mausoleum. Very interesting with great views.
Piazza del Popolo. The two domes look an identical pair from the piazza, but the third view shows how the larger dome has been made elliptical.
The river Tiber and the single island in the middle, the Isola Tiberina.
The massive Palace of Justice is beside the river.
The monstrous "Wedding Cake". The monument to the first king of unified Italy and, now, also to the Unknown Warrior. It is so hideously out of proportion with everything around it, that it should be demolished to unearth the part of the Forum that it buried. We can recommend visiting it for the view and to experience the sheer scale of it.
The present flower of Roma sit on the Spanish Steps, The graves of the two poets can be found at the Protestant Cemetery, next to the
Pyramid of Cestius.
More cats at the Largo Argentina. Named after silver and not the country, it has the remains of three ancient Greek temples.
Three weeks flew by. Rome is the perfect place for a long stay; warm, vivacious
and safe,
