The Plaza de Oriente area around the Royal Palace contains the Almudena cathederal.

It is only recently finished and was consecrated by Pope John Paul II.

The plaza is impressive, with the obligatory man-on-a-horse.

The Teatro Real opera house backs onto the plaza.   

The palace itself is immense and worth a look inside.
