
We had excellent weather for our visit to Pompeii. A guide sprang on us as soon
as we arrived and he was too charming to refuse. We benefited from his 40 years of
experience of the site, and spent longer than one might have expected raking over the sex
lives of the ancients.


Here we see original lead piping, some even older than the Yorkshire water mains.




The frescoes are well preserved and show the use of perspective 2000 years ago.

When bodies decomposed under the ash, they left a hollow of the original shape.
During excavation, plaster was poured in around the skeleton to produce these grim
figures.
