Paestum

Home Up

The ancient Greek town of Poseidonia, now called Paestum, dating from 500 BC.  It includes a great deal of Roman building from 273 BC, but is most famous for its three Greek temples.

The Temple of Neptune (may actually have been dedicated to Apollo) was the last built and best preserved.  It had to be bigger and grander than the others - perhaps bulkier than the architect would have liked.

The Temple of Athena is at the other end of town.

A well preserved Roman road runs the length of the town.

Next to Neptune, is the Temple of Hera.  Better proportioned, I think.

Much of the small Roman amphitheatre is under the modern road.

The Ekklesiasterion is the Greek debating area.
